Ingrid Fliter in recital: Concert review

Argentinian pianist Ingrid Fliter made her Australian debut playing the Schumann concerto with the Sydney Symphony under Israeli conductor Pinchas Steinberg last week.

And if those three performances weren’t enough to convince audiences that the 37-year-old is cast from the same mould as her mentor and compatriot Margaret Argerich, her solo recital at the City Recital Hall Angel Place on Monday, July 4, surely was.

Queen Elizabeth Hall recital, June 7th, 2011

The main part of her recital was devoted to sonatas by Beethoven – the second and third from the Op 31 set, and the Appassionata Op 57. All three works contained marvellous things, and the inner dramas of both the D minor sonata Op 31 no 2 and Op 57 were managed with real flair and imagination – the returns of the opening chords to punctuate the first movement of Op 31 no 2 were invested with mysterious beauty, the volatility of the Appassionata and its steady ratcheting up of intensity were timed to perfection.

Pianist Ingrid Fliter performed phenomenally Friday night with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra - St. Louis Classical Music Examiner

Ingrid Fliter's hands flew across the keyboard as if they had a life of their own during Ravel's whimsical, jazzy Piano Concerto in G Major Friday night. The stunning Argentine artist wowed the audience and brought them to their feet, deservedly so.

As Paul Schiavo's program notes state, "several passages" in the first movement "call to mind Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue,'" as the pianist scaled the Steinway from one end to the other. But a meticulous genius like Ravel could and did do more than mimic an American musical magician.

Edo de Waart, MSO, Ingrid Fliter - Third Coast Digest review

Pianist Ingrid Fliter was a joy in the Mozart. Her light touch and bright sound fit the music exactly. Everything sounded easy. The fleet piano embroideries in the first and third movements flew from her hands as easily and naturally as if she were strewing seeds in a sunny field. She endowed the slow movement with the languid ease of a rest beneath a shade tree. The concerto was a stroll in the country on the most beautiful day of spring.
